On Thursday, November 27, the play “Art&Money” premiered at Heartefact House in Belgrade. Written and directed by Swedish artist Freja Hallberg, and performed by actresses Vanja Ejdus and Milica Stefanović, the play tells the story of an impossible love affair between art and capital—of loneliness and the quiet cruelty of needing something you cannot live with. The paradox the art world loves to keep silent about—the deeply intimate relationship between art and money—was brought to the stage not as a metaphor but as a relationship between two real bodies.
This sharp, absurd, and tender performance about two forces that both desire and despise each other philosophically and painfully explores dependency, performativity, and value—economic, aesthetic, and emotional.
The creative team behind the production included costume designer Maja Mirković, composer Anton Alfven, lighting designer Nađa Vukorep, translators from Swedish Nikola Pušičić and Vesna Stanišić, as well as text assistant Jana Milivojević.
A special visual allure of the performance comes from the oversized dresses created by costume designer Maja Mirković which, in the words of the director, “are not costumes in the traditional sense—they are architecture, obstacles, tools, extensions of the two forces on stage that shape movement, sound, intimacy, and conflict.”
The play was produced as a collaboration between Heartefact (Serbia) and the Swedish companies Sweets/PotatoPotato, with the support of the Swedish Institute. After the Belgrade premiere, the production is scheduled to premiere in Stockholm in February next year.
Following the premiere on Thursday, November 27, the first rerun was held the next day, on November 28, and in December the audience can see the play on December 15. Tickets can be purchased on the Tickets.rs website and at all their sales points. The performance is staged at Heartefact House, Bulevar despota Stefana 7, starting at 8 PM.
