On October 20, 2025, the public discussion “Strengthening the Independent Cultural Scene: Funding, Spaces, and Advocacy” took place at the Drama Theatre in Skopje. Diverse representatives of the independent cultural scene, youth workers and artists highlighted the need for urgent changes in North Macedonia’s cultural policy.
The discussion was opened by H.E. Mr. Christoph Sommer, Ambassador of Switzerland, who emphasized Switzerland’s support for the cultural sector through advocacy initiatives for fair and transparent funding, and the creation of new spaces for artistic work. Participants discussed new funding models, challenges in securing and
maintaining creative spaces, and the importance of solidarity, networking, and public–civil partnerships for a sustainable cultural future.
This event was held to contextualize the new open call for advocacy grants, which is officially published yesterday, providing independent cultural organizations with the opportunity to strengthen their advocacy efforts and contribute to shaping long term and sustainable cultural policies.
