From June 22 to 28, 2025, an artistic residency of French playwright Gaelle Axelbrun took place at Heartefact House in Belgrade, as part of the European project Playground. During this intensive seven-day working period, Gaelle, together with director Tara Manić, translator Olja Petronić, and the acting ensemble—Nevena Kočović, Jana Bjelica, and Andrej Nježić—explored the dramaturgical and performative potential of her play Far from the Mud in Which We Sink into Sleep.
The focus of the residency was to explore the possibilities of performing this poetically rich and multilayered text for younger audiences, even though the play is primarily intended for adults. Through stage research, the team reflected on how themes such as childhood, family relationships, and the inner worlds of children could be brought closer to audiences of different generations.
The residency concluded with a public presentation held on Friday, June 27, at Heartefact House. The play was presented in the form of a staged reading, enhanced with performative elements such as sound, mise-en-scène, and props, which further illuminated the emotional layers of the drama and allowed the author to observe the performative potential of her text.
Following the reading, a conversation with the audience took place, moderated by director Patrik Lazić, Playground project coordinator on behalf of Heartefact. The discussion featured playwright Gaelle Axelbrun, director Tara Manić, and members of the acting ensemble, who shared insights into the working process, challenges, and opportunities that this residency model offers to emerging playwrights.
The residency in Belgrade was realized within the framework of the European project Playground, implemented by Heartefact in collaboration with organizations PAV and EURADIA (Italy), MOUSSON D’ÉTÉ (France), and TEATRUL ARIEL (Romania), with the support of the European Union through the Creative Europe program. The aim of the project is to foster the development of new European playwriting through practical work, translation, international exchange, and the connection of playwrights with directors, actors, and translators.
