With the poetic performance titled “Poets of Today, Voices of Tomorrow,” held at one of the most beautiful locations in Belgrade, Jevremovac Botanical Garden, the festival was officially opened.
Poet Radmila Petrović and 10 young poets presented their poetry in a new and unique way. Each performance was authentic and different, designed in accordance with the thematic essence of the poetry performed that evening, and adapted to the ambiance and type of plant nearby where the performance took place.
Throughout the two-hour performance, the audience had the opportunity to independently visit any of the 10 positions where the poets interpreted verses from their poems. However, Radmila Petrović opted for a different approach, choosing to find people herself through her poetry rather than having them seek her out. As a result, only a select number of visitors had the chance to encounter Radmila Petrović on one of the paths in the Botanical Garden and hear some of her verses.
Some of the poets specially wrote poems for this occasion, which they performed for the first time at the opening of BELEF. The stage performances of all poets were accompanied by music and lighting that corresponded to their artistic expression, affinities, and the advice of the artistic team.
The performance in the Botanical Garden was organized as one of the activities within the international project “Poets of Today, Voices of Tomorrow,” implemented by Heartefact in Serbia. This is a significant multi-year European project aimed at bringing poetry and contemporary poets closer to young people and the local community through the development of new performative forms of poetry presentation. Project partners include “Pionirski dom” from Slovenia, “Association of Children’s Cultural Centers” from Finland, “Pro Progressione” from Hungary, and “Arteria Foundation” from Poland.
The artistic team behind the project in Serbia consists of poet Radmila Petrović, actress Vanja Ejdus, composer Draško Adžić, and theater director Andrej Nosov.
The following poets performed at the opening of the 31st BELEF: Aleksa Krstić, Anđela Đokić, Danilo Brakočević, Jelena Marinkov, Marija Dragnić, Maša Seničić, Milica Milosavljević, Stefan Mitić, Tihana Smiljanić, and Valentina Baktijarević. We would also like to thank the creative studio Elektrobuba for designing and producing the lighting and neon installations.
The project “Poets of Today, Voices of Tomorrow” will run until 2025 and is supported by the European Union through the Creative Europe program.
