Beyond nostalgia and stigma.

“An Ongoing Song” is a piece of visual and physical theater which addresses the issue of mistrust towards one own’s body. Using props made of latex and wood, as well as plants in medicine bottles alongside laboratory glass containers, Szymon Adamczak and Billy Mullaney examine the corresponding agents between humans and the virus. The play, which takes a form of a duet, attempts to understand and manage the relationships in the presence of the HIV virus. Through the reiteration and reinvestment of the inherited performative gestures, the artists juggle the complexity of human relationships, risk-taking, danger, desire, vulnerability, self-harm, dependency, loss of innocence, morbid humor and affection. This performance piece is the result of the artists’ wish to understand what it is like to live with HIV nowadays. It intends to provide the audience with the insight into the perspective which aims beyond nostalgia and stigma – the concepts commonly related to HIV and AIDS.

On the first day of the festival, within its special program unit – the Pride theater matinee, the audience and young artists of various educational profiles will have an opportunity to talk to the author about his work on the play, his experience during the creation process, as well as about what it means to be queer and an HIV positive artist in today’s performance art practices. The members of the community and the guests of the festival will also have an opportunity to talk to the partners from the “Potent” organization – the National Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health. Besides, free testing for HIV will be provided at the Cultural Center “Grad” during the entire day.

Monday, September 13, 8:00 p.m., The Institution of Culture “Vuk” Fear of Butterflies (Serbia, The Institution of Culture “Vuk” and “Optimist” magazine) The metamorphosis to freedom.

The play “Fear of Butterflies” concerns the issue of personal freedom, betrayal and love which is viewed through the relationship among actors from a number of different perspectives (gender, sexual and political). Based on the biography of Vjeran Miladinović Merlinka and the motifs of the novel “Kiss of the Spider Woman”, the play attempts to answer the question of how we fight for freedom, what freedom means and what its price is. The space of prison where the action of the play is being performed forces its protagonists, Vjeran and Nikola, to engage in an interesting activity of inventing, retelling and imagining various film templates as a means of sheltering themselves, at least temporarily, from the reality they live in. By means of interesting directorial ideas, through manipulation and passing over in silence, the play brings to the stage two marginalized people (a political prisoner and a male prostitute), thus showing all the dangers of the Otherness in today’s world.

Tuesday, September 14, 8:00 p.m. “Raša Plaović” Stage, the National Theater in Belgrade “Mind the Gap” (Croatia, The Croatian National Theater in Varaždin) There are so many topics in the world to talk about.

The third festival day will see the performance of the play “Mind the Gap” by Romano Nikolić. By situating the play’s protagonists at the station, the director creates a drama situation whereby, according to the author, “he raises the question of what it means to be the Other and different, as well as of the extent to which we are actually different, being the Other”. By adopting a documentary approach to the play, the protagonists’ encounters become the ground for the interpretation of the many ways we see other people through different stereotypes and prejudices that we bring to our relationships. By means of intimate confessions and interwoven storylines, the play attempts to stress the need for viewing all differences in identities, outlooks on the world and policies from the perspectives of empathy and similarities rather than from those of hatred, lack of understanding and differences.

Wednesday, September 15, 8:00 p.m. “Predrag Pepi Laković” Stage, the Belgrade Drama Theater Water Drops on Burning Rocks (Serbia, the Belgrade Drama Theater) Our limits determine our lives.

The play “Water Drops on Burning Rocks” by Jug Đorđević, based on the text by Rainer Fassbinder, aims at revealing, by means of the relationship between the actor and the director working together on the play, the dynamics of power(lessness) which frequently dominates the relationships outside the professional domain. To point that out more cleraly, using the relationships between two homosexual couples as well as the relationships of two men onstage and offstage, the play further attempts to answer the questions as to why it is so difficult for us to jump out of our own roles and to what extent the dynamics of heteronormative relationships determine our life – more often than not to a greater extent than it is determined by those decisions we consider our own.

Carolina Bianchi, a Brazilian artist, will close the festival week by working, through studio visits, on her new project “Cadela Força – Chapter One: The Bride and Goodnight Cinderella”. By rethinking the boundaries of women’s art, a woman’s position in performative art practices and the way some of them treated the issues of violence, abuse and neglect, the author will present the results of her seven-day work in the form of a performance. This unique theater prologue evokes the tragic story of the last performance by Italian performance artist Pippa Bacca, who was killed during her performance of “Brides on Tour”, and makes the author reflect on performance and theater while reviving the play that sends her to sleep. During her stay in Belgrade, Carolina Bianchi will be collaborating with applied music composer Irena Dragović Popović.

They Are All Gone Directed by Andrej Nosov Performed at the International Theatre Festival MESS in Sarajevo

The production They Are All Gone, written by Doruntina Basha and directed by Andrej Nosov, was performed on 10 October as part of the 66th International Theatre Festival MESS in Sarajevo, one of the most prominent and longest-running international theatre festivals in this part of Europe. Heartefact’s Kosovo-Serbia Visiting Program in Pristina from December 3 to 6

From 3rd-6th of December 2025, Heartefact organized the Kosovo–Serbia Visiting Program, held in Pristina, Kosovo. The program brought together participants from Serbia – psychologists, psychotherapists, artists, political science students, and activists – for a four-day visit focused on regional cooperation in the context of women’s rights, minority rights, and transitional justice.

Heartefact’s Play “They Are All Gone” Directed by Andrej Nosov Premieres in New York

After its Belgrade premiere in May this year at the Heartefact House and its Sarajevo premiere in November at the Sarajevo War Theatre SARTR, the play “They Are All Gone”, written by Doruntina Basha and directed by Andrej Nosov, had its New York premiere from December 4 to 7, 2025 — with as many as five performances.

Premiere of the play “Art&Money” at Heartefact House

On Thursday, November 27, the play “Art&Money” premiered at Heartefact House in Belgrade. Written and directed by Swedish artist Freja Hallberg, and performed by actresses Vanja Ejdus and Milica Stefanović, the play tells the story of an impossible love affair between art and capital—of loneliness and the quiet cruelty of needing something you cannot live with.

Sarajevo Premiere of the Play “They Are All Gone” Held at SARTR

Following its Belgrade premiere in May this year, the Sarajevo premiere of the play “They Are All Gone” by Doruntina Basha, directed by Andrej Nosov, was held on November 11 at the Sarajevo War Theatre SARTR. The production is part of the official program marking the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, through which SARTR and its partner organizations highlight the importance of remembrance culture and artistic testimony. Additional performances are scheduled for November 12 and 13.

Playground Workshop for the Development of the Play “Don’t Run Hamlet” by Francesca Garolla Held at Heartefact House

The Playground workshop for the development of a dramatic text was held in Belgrade, at Heartefact House, from November 3 to November 9, 2025. The workshop was led by actress and professor of acting Marija Milenković, with director Patrik Lazić accompanying and facilitating the process. The workshop focused on developing the new play by Italian playwright Francesca Garolla.

Playground Workshop for the Development of the Play “…lead us not into temptation…” by Mark Oltean Held at Heartefact House

The Playground workshop for the development of a new play was held in Belgrade, at Heartefact House, from October 27 to November 2, 2025. The workshop was led by theatre director and author Patrik Lazić, and it focused on the development of a play-in-progress by the young Hungarian-Romanian playwright Mark Oltean.

In Belgrade, we brought together activists from Kosovo during a four-day visit dedicated to women’s rights!

From October 23 to 26, 2025, Heartefact organized the Kosovo–Serbia Visiting Program, held in Belgrade. The program gathered six participants from Kosovo – activists, cultural workers, and researchers – for a four-day visit dedicated to women’s rights, gender equality, and the prevention of sexual violence. Throughout their stay, participants met with leading feminist and human rights organizations from Belgrade.

12th Bašta Fest: All we need — connection, dialogue, and art!

The 12th Bašta Fest was held in Bajina Bašta, at the Vlaja Cultural Center, where 27 short films from 17 countries were screened over the course of three days. The festival was opened by Nevena Nerandžić, and the audience enjoyed a diverse film and educational program, as well as a stage-cleaning performance that symbolically marked a new beginning.

Strengthening the Independent Cultural Scene – the public discussion held in Skopje

On October 20, 2025, the public discussion “Strengthening the Independent Cultural Scene: Funding, Spaces, and Advocacy” took place at the Drama Theatre in Skopje. Diverse representatives of the independent cultural scene, youth workers and artists highlighted the need for urgent changes in North Macedonia’s cultural policy.

The Culture for Development is announcing a Call for Advocacy Grants Scheme to empower independent cultural organizations in the Republic of North Macedonia to address urgent challenges and advocate for long-term, systemic improvements in the cultural sector. The purpose of this call is to support initiatives that strengthen dialogue with decision-makers, mobilize communities, and foster cross-sector collaboration, thereby improving operational conditions and financial sustainability of the independent cultural scene.

Open Application Call for Kosovo–Serbia Bridge Fellowship Program

Heartefact is pleased to announce an ongoing open call for the Kosovo-Serbia Bridge Fellowship Program – a cross-border initiative that supports young professionals, researchers, and creatives from Kosovo and Serbia who are eager to build new and constructive narratives about the relations between the two societies. Unlike previous editions, this year’s call will remain open year-round. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and fellows will be selected according to the quality, originality, and potential impact of their proposed research and action plans.

Young People from Serbia Explore Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Novi Pazar through the Regional VIBE Program

From October 9 to 11, 2025, Heartefact organized a three-day program dedicated to young people from Serbia as part of the regional initiative VIBE – Connecting Young People. The journey included visits to Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Novi Pazar, with the aim of helping young participants explore different parts of the country — their cultural heritage, social and political context.

From September 26 to 29, 2025, the playwriting workshop “Personal Story as the Inspiration for a Theatre Play” was held at Heartefact House in Belgrade, marking the final activity of the two-year project “Fabulamundi – New Voices.”

Pančevo Film Festival: Brave Cinematic Voices Driving Social Change

As part of the “Culture for Democracy” project, supported by the Government of Switzerland, the Pančevo Film Festival was officially opened last week in Pančevo. The ninth edition of the festival reaffirmed PAFF’s reputation as a platform for auteur cinema, social dialogue, and the promotion of young artistic voices.

Culture for Democracy: Supported Projects within the Boost Grants Call

As part of the Culture for Democracy (CfD) project, Heartefact launched the Boost Grants call on June 9, 2025, to support established cultural and artistic organizations in Serbia. The goal of this call was to strengthen the organizational capacities and resilience of independent cultural actors through long-term support, enhanced strategic development, and improved financial sustainability.

The final networking event of the project Voices from the margins was held

From 4 to 6 September 2025, the final networking event of the Voices from the margins project took place in Belgrade. During the three-day visit to Belgrade, the programme participants—young activists from all over Serbia—had the opportunity to tour several relevant non-governmental organizations, and meet other activists.

The First Sarajevo Theatre Showcase Presented Numerous Young Artists to the Regional and European Theatre Public

From September 12 to 15, Sarajevo hosted the first edition of the Sarajevo Theatre Showcase, an annual professional event that provides a significant development platform for theatre professionals from Southeast Europe. The Showcase is organized by cultural organizations and theatres from five countries: Sarajevo War Theatre SARTR, Heartefact from Serbia, Ulysses Theatre from Croatia, Binario Vivo from Italy, Para Film&Theatre from Norway, and Realstage from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Exhibition of Personal Stories from Marginalized Communities “There’s Room for Everyone” Opened at Heartefact House

The exhibition “There’s Room for Everyone”, part of the campaign of the same name, was officially opened on Thursday, September 4, in the lobby of Heartefact House and will be available to visitors until the end of September. Photographs of various marginalized communities in Serbia, staged inside an elevator, are accompanied by personal testimonies of participants, highlighting that diversity should not be a reason for exclusion, but rather an opportunity for solidarity.

Students from Serbia visited the Short Theatre Festival in Rome within the European project Fabulamundi – New Voices

As part of the final phase of the European project Fabulamundi – New Voices, in which Heartefact and partners from about ten countries have been participating over the past two and a half years, we organized a visit of students from Serbia to the partner festival Short Theatre in Rome. The visit took place from September 5 to 7, during the 20th anniversary edition of this renowned festival.

Young Artists and Activists from Serbia Visited Festivals in Pristina and Prizren as Part of Heartefact’s Visiting Program

As part of Heartefact’s Kosovo–Serbia Visiting Program, we organized a visit in early August to festivals in Pristina and Prizren for a group of young artists and activists from Serbia. During the visit, the participants had the opportunity to attend three major cultural events in Kosovo – the 24th edition of the DokuFest International Documentary Film Festival in Prizren, the 6th edition of the Sunny Hill music festival in Pristina, and the 5th edition of the Autostrada Biennale, an international contemporary art festival.

On Sunday, July 6, a public presentation of the play Doughnuts (Buhtle) was held at Heartefact House, marking the conclusion of the four-day Playground for New Voices workshop. The workshop took place within the European project Fabulamundi: New Voices, which Heartefact implements with partners from nine European countries. It was led by director and playwright Patrik Lazić, in collaboration with emerging playwright Jelena Krdžavac, the acting ensemble, and translator Olja Petronić.

Exploring and developing contemporary drama through process: Doughnuts by Jelena Krdžavac in the spotlight of the Playground workshop

As part of the Fabulamundi project, implemented by Heartefact in collaboration with partners from nine European countries, the Playground workshop is taking place in Belgrade from July 3 to 6. Led by director and playwright Patrik Lazić, the workshop brings together a cast of actors and emerging playwright Jelena Krdžavac to explore and further develop her play Doughnuts (Buhtle), which was shortlisted in last year’s Heartefact Competition for Best Contemporary Socially Engaged Drama.

Culture for Democracy: Supported Projects within the Call for Cultural and Artistic Project Implementation in Serbia

An exceptional response—totaling 273 applications—reflects the critical position of the cultural sector in Serbia in the context of the current political and social climate. Based on the Commission’s evaluation, 22 projects have been selected for support, with a total budget of 21,500,000.00 RSD. Although this amount exceeds the originally planned budget for this call, we believe that, amid the ongoing crisis and with public calls for cultural funding either canceled or indefinitely postponed, such support is more necessary than ever.

Artistic Residency and Public Presentation of Gaelle Axelbrun’s Play Held as Part of the Playground Project

From June 22 to 28, 2025, an artistic residency of French playwright Gaelle Axelbrun took place at Heartefact House in Belgrade, as part of the European project Playground. During this intensive seven-day working period, Gaelle, together with director Tara Manić, translator Olja Petronić, and the acting ensemble—Nevena Kočović, Jana Bjelica, and Andrej Nježić—explored the dramaturgical and performative potential of her play Far from the Mud in Which We Sink into Sleep.

Residency of French Author Gaelle Axelbrun in Belgrade as Part of the Playground Project

From June 22 to 28, 2025, the Heartefact House in Belgrade will host a residency for French playwright Gaelle Axelbrun as part of the European project Playground. This intensive seven-day residency, organized by Heartefact, is part of an international collaboration focused on the development of contemporary dramatic texts by emerging European authors.

First Seminar for Youth from Serbia Held as Part of the Regional VIBE Program

From June 20 to 22, 2025, Heartefact organized a three-day seminar for young people from Serbia in Belgrade as part of the regional program VIBE – Connecting Young People. The program brings together youth from Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation and exchange. Designed as a space for learning, dialogue, and connection, it focuses on human rights, regional cooperation, the shared history of the region, and reflections on the future that young people wish to shape through activism and civic engagement.
