Heartefact’s production How I Learned to Drive was presented in Naples this weekend as part of the first international edition of TXT Festival, held under the motto “The Pleasure of the Text.” The festival was founded by Pier Lorenzo Pisano, Italian writer, dramaturg and director, and Artistic Director at Teatro di Napoli – Teatro Nazionale. It brought together theatre artists from across Europe, with acclaimed British playwright Martin Crimp among its special guests. This year’s programme focused on family relationships in all their complexity, from love and intimacy to conflict, memory, trauma, power and boundaries.
For Heartefact, participating in the Naples festival marks another step in its international collaboration and the growing visibility of theatre and artists from the region. How I Learned to Drive is Heartefact’s most internationally awarded production, and its themes of family, abuse, memory and forgiveness continue to resonate with audiences across different countries and cultural contexts. The production had previously been presented to Italian audiences in four performances in March this year as part of FOG Triennale Milano Performing Arts, an international festival bringing together artists from around the world across contemporary theatre, dance, performance and music.
Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play follows Li’l Bit, a young woman looking back on her childhood and her complex relationship with her uncle. Through memories of driving lessons and family encounters, tenderness, trust and authority gradually intertwine with manipulation and violated boundaries.
Directed by Tara Manić and performed by Svetozar Cvetković and Marta Bogosavljević, the production was created for the intimate setting of Heartefact House. Rather than offering simple answers to a difficult story, it stays with its contradictions, asking what happens when care and harm exist within the same relationship, and how we live with what has happened to us.
Belgrade audiences will have another opportunity to see the production on 12 October at Heartefact House.
Tickets are available via tickets.rs and at all their sales points.
