As part of the “Culture for Democracy” project, supported by the Government of Switzerland, the Pančevo Film Festival was officially opened last week in Pančevo. The ninth edition of the festival reaffirmed PAFF’s reputation as a platform for auteur cinema, social dialogue, and the promotion of young artistic voices.
This year’s edition returned to its five-day format, once again highlighting the festival’s mission – to be a meeting place for bold filmmakers, new perspectives, and socially engaged stories that shed light on current societal issues.
The festival opened with The Naughty Girls, directed by Urška Đukić, which is also Slovenia’s official submission for the Oscars. Over the course of five days, audiences had the opportunity to watch more than 40 films, including numerous regional and international titles.
The festival concluded with Jasmila Žbanić’s film Blum – Masters of Their Future, this year’s Bosnian Oscar candidate.
A special emphasis was placed on working with youth: 12 short films by young authors were screened, and the award for the best film in this selection was decided by a jury composed of 16 high school students, under the mentorship of director Mina Đukić. In this way, the festival directly involves young people in critical reflection on art and society.
The festival is supported by the “Culture for Democracy” project, which aims to strengthen the independent cultural scene in Serbia. The project promotes art as a tool for developing critical thinking, social responsibility, and democratic values, especially at the local level.
