Project description: Preševo is a multiethnic municipality with an exceptionally large youth population, a demographic profile that is increasingly uncommon in many local communities across Serbia. The municipality is predominantly inhabited by ethnic Albanians, while young people face significant challenges, including limited employment opportunities, a lack of cultural and contemporary public programmes, and few prospects for building their future within the local community. Previous attempts by civil society organizations to organize cultural events have often had only short-term impact due to the absence of sustained institutional support from the local authorities. Xhada Fest was conceived as an opportunity to activate the local community, particularly its young people, and encourage them to engage directly in dialogue with others who share similar values and aspirations.
The festival’s second edition presented a diverse programme of panel discussions, exhibitions, children’s workshops, and music concerts, all designed to raise awareness of important social issues, promote culture, address violence against women, and encourage community participation and cooperation. Bringing together artists, activists, and citizens, the festival created a platform for cultural dialogue and social change. Panel discussions addressed topics such as gender equality, human rights, and sustainable development. A series of exhibitions showcased the work of both local and international artists, with a particular focus on contemporary art and photography. A dedicated programme for children featured interactive art workshops that encouraged creativity and participation among the youngest members of the community. The festival also included evening concerts featuring local bands and musicians from a variety of musical genres, providing additional opportunities for artistic exchange and public engagement.
Beyond its public programme, Xhada Fest fostered networking among artists, cultural practitioners, and professionals from different fields, further strengthening the cultural ecosystem in Preševo. By creating a space for open dialogue, collaboration, and artistic expression, the festival contributed not only to the development of the local cultural scene but also to greater civic participation, social responsibility, and community engagement.
