Project description: The CfD support for the “Theatre in the Garden” project enabled the hosting of five independent contemporary plays in June 2023 in Bajina Bašta, a town without regular professional or amateur theatre programming. The cultural institution “Kultura” had recently been renovated and equipped with proper equipment for performing arts, but no theatre productions or guest performances had taken place in Bajina Bašta before this project. Given the previous experience of the Theatre Creative Center “Talija” in organizing theatre projects in Bajina Bašta, it was logical for them to take the first step and introduce the local audience to plays that address important socially engaged topics, which they would not otherwise have the opportunity to see. The performances included: “Wind and Flags”, a monodrama about Tanasko Rajić directed by Milan Milosavljević, “Oxygen”, a duodrama by Ivan Viripaev directed by Milja Mazarak, “And We Will Never Part” by Jon Fosse, directed by Katarina Vještica, “On the Cliff”, a duodrama by Igor Bauersima directed by Zoran Zarubica, and “Nana”, a monodrama based on Émile Zola’s novel directed by Tijana Vasić. Two of the plays were performed in an intimate setting for about 100 attendees, while the others played to full houses, with over 800 people attending. The key goal for the organizers was to spark local interest in theatre with socially engaged themes such as mental health, peer violence, political, social, and religious views, gender equality, and reexamining history. Given that the cultural institution “Kultura” had been renovated and now has much better technical conditions than before, this project marked the first significant step in developing the theatre scene and audience in Bajina Bašta, with the long-term goal of establishing a professional theatre in the town.
