READ ALOUD! Public Reading Towards Democratization – Užice Literary Republic

Project description: The partnership grant between the Užice Literary Republic and the Workers’ Commune Links from Belgrade resulted in a collection of scholarly papers on the work of Miodrag Stanisavljević titled “Difficult Consonant Combinations,” featuring contributions from about ten relevant authors and professors from regional, European, and global universities. The collection was printed and presented to high school students from Užice at the Užice National Library. Concurrently, the exhibition “I Don’t Know Anything About Miša Stanisavljević” was set up at the Center for Cultural Decontamination in Belgrade. During the exhibition opening, attended by students from several Belgrade high schools as well as from Užice Gymnasium, the collection was also presented. Later, a public reading of the play “The Emperor’s Captive” by Miodrag Stanisavljević was organized in Belgrade, involving participants from the summer school “Read Aloud,” including high school students from Užice, Zrenjanin, and Belgrade. Audio recordings of radio dramas were posted on the Užice Literary Republic’s YouTube channel, and flyers with QR codes leading to these recordings were printed. For the needs of the library for the blind and visually impaired, special end credits were created according to guidelines received from professionals at the Blind Federation Library of Serbia “Dr Milan Budimir” from Belgrade. The main target group of the project is high school students, recognized as creators of quality programs for youth. Working on the preparation of public readings empowered the participants with the belief that engagement is necessary to achieve a quality program, and presenting their work in Belgrade developed and strengthened the belief that, despite coming from smaller environments, their work can be recognized and valued in a larger cultural center. Future ideas include promoting the collection at the Yugoslav Theater Festival in Užice, which would introduce Miodrag Stanisavljević’s work and the entire project to theater professionals from the region, as well as working on the idea of proposing to the Street Naming Commission that a street in Belgrade be named after Miodrag Stanisavljević, thus bringing his work into the spotlight of the broader public. Additionally, it was proposed to prepare a new edition of the children’s poetry collection “Left Kings,” which would also contribute to the greater visibility of Miša Stanisavljević’s work and his poetry of resistance.
