Limitations – Mezanin

Project description: Civil society actors, artists, and professionals working in the creative industries within the field of contemporary art occupy a disadvantaged position in Serbia’s cultural production landscape. This is particularly true for authors and artists who live and work in the southern and eastern regions of the country. In a context where they have limited opportunities to sell their cultural products or generate sufficient income to sustain and develop their artistic practice, cultural actors in Serbia remain heavily dependent on the state and the cultural policies it implements. As a result, artists from southern and eastern Serbia working in the field of contemporary art find themselves in an especially precarious position. Those operating on the margins of contemporary artistic production, cultivating avant-garde and experimental forms and content, have even fewer opportunities for artistic creation, professional development, and collaboration.

As part of the project, photography workshops were led by Jelena Vladušić and Jelena Kovačević Vorgučin, video art workshops were conducted by Filip Markovinović, and workshops in experimental electronic music were led by Igor Štanglicki, Uroš Dimitrijević, and Slađan Milenović. Following these educational activities, participants developed their own creative works through a production phase based on the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshops. An exhibition of experimental photography featuring participants’ works was held at the Gallery of the Association of Architects of Niš, while the Feedback Club in Niš hosted an event presenting collaborative audiovisual works created by participants of the video art and experimental electronic music workshops.

By organizing workshops in photography, video art, and experimental electronic music, the project enabled artists working in marginalized and underrepresented artistic disciplines to strengthen both their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Through education, the exchange of experience, and collaborative work, participants were able to further develop their artistic practices. At the same time, the workshops fostered networking and collaboration among participants themselves, as well as with artists from Belgrade and Novi Sad.
