Jobshadowing – Apostrof Association

Project description: The Apostrof Association, founded by young architects Stefan Milošević, Emir Kahrimanović, and Maryam Kristina Gbaya, engaged expert Vladimir Ilić to help them overcome the challenges involved in developing an architectural and artistic installation from concept to completion. Their goal was to create artistic installations in the form of urban furniture that would bring young people together in cities across Serbia while encouraging reflection through the integration of architecture and culture.

The job shadowing programme strengthened the participants’ skills related to project implementation, team organisation, and the distribution of tasks according to individual expertise and interests. It also highlighted the importance of consulting experts from different professional fields as part of the development of young professionals.

An important part of the training focused on raising awareness of safety in relation to interventions in public space, as well as understanding the physical, visual, and social impact of architectural and artistic installations on their surroundings. This was followed by the development of technical and workshop drawings as preparation for implementation. The final stage of the project involved preparing detailed material specifications, including quantities and costs, as well as obtaining permits and justifying the project before the relevant authorities. Through this process, the participants recognised the importance of administrative procedures within project implementation. During the preparation of the technical documentation, they gained valuable practical knowledge related to structural engineering, construction, project stability, precise material calculations, and the procedures required to obtain permits for installing public artworks.

By completing every stage of the process—from the initial creative concept to the materialisation of the project, the preparation of technical documentation, communication and coordination with institutions, understanding the meaning of materials and their semantic and economic value, and direct collaboration with those involved in the physical construction of the installation – the participants developed professional, organisational, and communication skills essential for their future careers.

The most valuable lesson they took away, and one they believe applies to every aspect of life, was the advice they received from the expert: “The most important thing is to see your project through to the end exactly as you envisioned it, true to your own idea and vision. Nothing else is an option. Through your work, you are building yourself.”
