Future: Women’s history of Niš through artistic practices – Nova mreža Association

Project description: Starting from the gender inequality in the field of culture and creativity that female artists in the south and east of Serbia face even more drastically, Nova mreza has issued a call for the education of female artists interested in filmmaking, from that region. Out of the twenty or so applicants, 5 participants were selected and worked with through workshops to train them in filmmaking, from idea to realization.

Since it was important for them to present significant historical figures in the south and east of Serbia in their films, they first had workshops led by historian Ana Jovanović, during which they encountered the concept of women’s history of Niš. Dramaturg Jelena Anđelovski held workshops on screenwriting, and directors Tea Lukač and Maja Novaković on filming documentaries and short video works. At the end of the theoretical workshops, the participants received practical training from their mentor director Vladimir Đorđević. After completing the previous workshops, the participants completed their scripts, which they further developed with Đorđević through the creative production process. The mentor introduced them to creating a shooting plan, selecting locations for filming, working with actors and a cinematographer. During the process, they learned practical aspects of film directing and editing with elements of post-production. Their participation in this part of the process was more focused on the creative process through which they rounded off their ideas, and less on the technical aspects of post-production that were carried out by the engaged professionals. This process ended with the completion of their short films: “O Vera, who are you?” Neda Rakočević, “Hristina among us” by Marina Radulović, “Bojana Ramonda” by Olivera Milošević, “Mirjana by herself” by Nina Spasić and “Red, the fashion hit of the season” by Maja Delibašić.

The films were shown as part of the global campaign “Orange the World – 16 days of activism against violence against women” implemented by the European House in Serbia, at the European House in Niš and at the European House in Novi Sad, and on International Human Rights Day, December 10, the documentary films were screened to the audience at the Hartefact House in Belgrade, and afterwards also to the audience in Svrljig and Knjaževac.
