Bašta Fest – International Short Fiction Film Festival in Bajina Bašta – Academic Scene Association

Project description: Bašta Fest is an international short fiction film festival held annually in July in the town of Bajina Bašta since 2014. Drawing on the region’s rich natural and tourism potential, a significant part of the festival programme takes place outdoors. Accordingly, the festival also dedicates part of its programme to environmental protection in the area where it is held -within and around Tara National Park- and to raising ecological awareness. Bašta Fest plays an important role in the decentralization of culture in Serbia, the promotion and professional development of emerging filmmakers, and the cultural education and engagement of the local community. Its target audience includes young filmmakers from around the world, audiences interested in short and auteur cinema, residents of the Zlatibor District, and visitors from across Serbia. The festival features a diverse programme consisting of film screenings, music events, educational activities, and environmental initiatives.

The eleventh edition of Bašta Fest was held from 4 to 7 July 2024 in Bajina Bašta. The programme placed a special emphasis on films distinguished by outstanding acting performances and by directors’ distinctive approaches to working with actors. The festival programme was organized into four main segments. The international competition featured 25 short films from 17 countries, alongside one feature film screened at the festival’s closing. The daytime programme included excursions for festival participants and guests to some of the region’s most attractive natural sites, including Lake Perućac, Lake Zaovine, Tara Mountain, and the Drina River. The festival also hosted the 5th Bašta Pitch industry programme. A Youth Jury, composed of five high school students from Bajina Bašta, worked under the mentorship of filmmaker Mina Đukić. Prior to the festival, a workshop entitled Who Is Who: Professions in Theatre and Film was organized for local high school students and led by producers Jelena Knežević and Milan Stojanović. The accompanying programme included a series of environmental initiatives, while all film screenings were held outdoors in Borići Park.

By bringing high-quality cultural programming to a smaller community, Bašta Fest contributes to the cultural emancipation of the local population while promoting the short film format and supporting the education and professional development of emerging filmmakers. This was the second time that Heartefact supported Bašta Fest through the Culture for Democracy programme.
