I am Biljana Vasojević (52) from Čačak. For 28 years, I have been actively working in the field of support for people living with diabetes, and for 25 years I have been part of the Diabetes Mellitus Čačak Association, where I currently serve as the legal representative. My dedication is also deeply personal – I am the mother of a son who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of two, which strongly shaped my activist commitment. Throughout my long-term engagement, I have witnessed numerous challenges faced by people with diabetes and their families – discrimination, misunderstanding, lack of information, and difficulties that arise throughout all stages of life, from childhood to old age. I am particularly committed to protecting the rights of children and young people, preventing peer violence against those who use insulin, as well as supporting elderly people who live with chronic illnesses and often experience neglect. The Diabetes Mellitus Čačak Association actively works on public advocacy, education, prevention, the collection of testimonies, and building cooperation between institutions, schools, and disability organizations, with the goal of establishing a system that ensures equal access to modern therapy, including glucose monitoring sensors. By participating in the HRL Program, I aim to strengthen my advocacy skills, expand my network of partners, and gain new tools that will help me continue the fight against discrimination and empower people living with diabetes.
