In the Embrace of the Forgotten – Citizens’ Association IMPULS

Project description: The project focuses on the culture of remembrance of the first local feminist and human rights activists in this highly closed and patriarchal environment. The struggles they fought were primarily related to girls’ education, enabling their economic independence, and advocating for women’s rights in rural communities.

The process of collecting stories for the theatre performance, through interviews and group work with women, already engaged and activated the local community. Throughout the project, through various meetings and activities, at least 60 women participated. This approach enabled the creation of a safe space where women could freely participate and contribute to the project. Alongside contemporary experiences, the project also focused on the life stories of women from the past who played an important role in the development of culture, education, healthcare, and the overall democratisation of society. These stories shed light on the challenges women faced and their contributions throughout history, emphasising their crucial role in building communities.

Ten stories were collected and served as the foundation for the dramatic text. An important contribution to the creative process was made by Professor Nadija Rebronja, who joined the project as a volunteer. Her knowledge of the local context significantly supported the dramatization of the collected stories.

IMPULS has been recognised by the community for its previous cooperation with local schools and its engagement with a large part of the secondary school population through pressing social topics, particularly gender equality. The importance of this project is further reflected in the support of local actors and the wider community, including the provision of free space for drama workshops and the mobilisation of young women who actively participated in project activities.

The dramatization of stories about women who fought for women’s rights contributes to raising awareness of the importance of gender equality and strengthening feminist activism within the community.
