I am Marika Živković (39) from Sokobanja, a journalist currently in the process of launching an independent media outlet, Sokolica (a web portal and podcast), within the Association for the Development of Culture and Tourism Sokolica. The idea for this media platform emerged from the lack of space for public dialogue in the local community, with the aim of fostering understanding, solidarity, and social responsibility. Sokolica aspires to become a sustainable media platform grounded in universal values of culture and human rights, applying the principles of solutions journalism. The association supports the media through cultural and educational activities that bring relevant content closer to the local community. My particular interests include issues of inclusion, mental health, and social justice, with a focus on multi-layered support for mothers of children with autism. I have developed my professional skills through the Journalists’ Association of Serbia’s Media Oases project, the Media Incubator of the Media and Reform Center in Niš (program winner), and the Press Academy of Nova ekonomija (award for local-level investigative journalism). I see participation in the HRL Program as an opportunity to further develop my knowledge in the fields of human rights, public advocacy, and leadership, to strengthen my personal capacities, and to contribute – through concrete activities and solutions – creating a more open and just social environment.
