NEW Masterclass educational program

NEW is a platform that reveals, connects and educates young and talented theatrical authors. It came up from the necessity to help young people who are engaged in production in the field of performing and visual arts in Serbia and the region and enable them to continue their education.

Thanks to the projects within this platform, domestic theater audiences will rise to a higher level, which will led to its reposition on the European cultural and art scene. This is the first platform of this type in the Balkans and as such it aims to make Belgrade one of the centers of contemporary drama and performing arts in Europe.

On the website, the contemporary creation of unapproved artists will be promoted, which will affect their education, as well as the creation of financial mechanisms for the development and sustainability of their art.

One of the parts of the NEW platform is Masterclass program created for people from the region who are engaged in theatrical art – contemporary drama art, theater production, directing or program planning in the theater.

Masterclass programs include three courses:

NEW Program of Contemporary Dramaturgy that will be held on October 28th and 29th

NEW Creative Production Program that will be held on November 2nd and 3rd

NEW Program of Artistic Management of The Theater that will be held on November 5th and 6th

During the duration of the Masterclass Program, participants will have the opportunity to get to know more about the different aspects of contemporary dramaturgy and artistic production. The result of the Masterclass program will be showcases, which will be held in December 2018, in which participants will be introduced to the local cultural scene.

Contemporary dramaturgy will be taught by Biljana Srbljanović, drama writer and full-time professor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. For many years, her dramas have been one of the most prominent, not only in the country, but also in the region. She is known for her sharp attitude, unequivocal artistic expression and a clear critique of contemporary society.

During the lectures and practical exercises, participants will have opportunity to meet better the process of creating contemporary drama. Workshops of contemporary theater dramaturgy, will focus at the creation of dramatic narratives on the basis of concrete historic actions, which will be of the choice of participants. The object of this masterclass will be material research, systematization, separation historic fabula and making dramatic synopsis which can be reconstruction, reinterpretation, deconstruction, polemics with given fabula or with historic background.

Workshops of creative production will be led by Tobias Veit, Executive Director of the Saubine Theater in Berlin. His journey through this theater led him from the head of artistic production to the executive director of the theater. During his career, he also collaborated with great world directors, dramatists, actors and other associates of some of the most famous theater productions.

The idea about the Masterclass of creative production developed from the need for professionals which would be engaged in production in the field of performing and visual arts in Serbia and the region. The school is organized like the process of learning through the practice of team creative process, workshops and lectures that connect art and production. Special quality of the program is opportunity for participants to meet personally and talk to professionals from the field of visual, performing arts and production.

Artistic management will be held by Andreas Beck, director of the Basel Theater. According to the voices of German critics, this theater was declared as the theater of the year in 2018. Beck was director of the Vienna Schauspielhaus, then switched to the same position in Basel, and from 2019/20 will inherit Martin Kushei at the scene of the intent of one of the most important German Residenztheater’s theater in Munich.

The workshop of artistic management of contemporary theatre, includes transmitting the knowledge and mechanisms of work and making artistic team-director, dramaturg, writer in residence, home director, etc. on making and profiling program, repertoire and content of one of leading European theatre houses. How to make repertoire, choose artistic collaborators, engage ensemble, are parts of complex mosaic which makes the long-term extended picture of an artistic profile of the theatre of 21st century. Participants must have the basic knowledge from history of theatre, contemporary theatre flows, but above all theatre production and methodology.’

The result of all Masterclass programs will be showcases, which will be held in December 2018, in which the participants will show acquired knowledge and will be introduced to the national cultural scene. Work with mentor of masterclass will be continued on platform NEW after the workshop ends.

Participation in Masterclass is free, and Heartefact Foundation has provided scholarships and travel expenses for a certain number of participants from countries from the region. Lectures and interactive workshops will be held in Belgrade, and the working language for the guest lecturers is English. The new platform is created by Heartefact Foundation, an organization founded in 2009 with the aim of strengthening critical awareness and building free societies in the region through creative, professional and artistic exchange. Thirty professionals in the field of performing arts, culture and cultural policies are involved in the realization of the activities, such as: Biljana Srbljanović, Andreas Beck, Tobias White, Maria Magdalena Ludvig, Martin Hamer and others.

Additional education and the development of young artists who creates outside the socio-political frameworks are one of the basic preconditions of a free and responsible society, for which Hartefakt stands out from its beginning.
