Project description: The Festival of Roma and Serbian Culture in Prokuplje provided an opportunity to promote unity through art and culture, offering a rich and diverse programme that successfully attracted the attention and interest of the local community. The main activity of the project was the Festival of Roma and Serbian Culture, which presented Roma and Serbian artists working in the fields of literature, film, and music. The audience had the opportunity to learn more about the cultures of both communities and to engage in conversations with the artists who participated in the festival. Around fifteen young people of Roma and Serbian nationality were involved in the organisation of the festival. They participated in film workshops at the Prokuplje Grammar School, where they learned the basics of filmmaking. During the workshops, they also created a short documentary film that was presented as part of the festival’s closing programme. The participants chose to make a film about the Topličanin Boxing Club, an excellent example of joint work between Roma and Serbian boxers who train together and achieve significant results. The club is considered the most successful sports club in Prokuplje’s history, having been the Yugoslav vice-champion three times during the 1970s, while its boxers won major European and world medals. Among its most renowned boxers are Fazlija Šaćirović and Bratislav Ristić, both world vice-champions. With the support of mentors, the workshop participants independently wrote the script, filmed, and edited the documentary. An important outcome of the workshop was that the young participants developed friendships and continued spending time together after the programme, meeting in recreational spaces, going for walks around the city, and socialising.

The Festival of Roma and Serbian Culture was opened at the Cultural Centre through a joint presentation of works by Roma and Serbian writers from Prokuplje: Mirjana Jumerović, Rade Vučković, Aladin Jumerović, Srbijanka Stanković, Ivana Đurković, and Mirjana Ranđelović. The festival consisted of a series of cultural events. On the following day, the festival organisers spent time with local residents, while the evening programme at the Cultural Centre featured the documentary created during the film workshops.

Alongside the main documentary, short films by prominent Roma and Serbian authors were screened, followed by discussions with the audience.

On the final day of the festival, the public discussion Different, Yet the Same was held in the morning, while in the evening a mini concert of traditional Roma and Serbian folk music took place on the plateau in front of the Cultural Centre. The concert featured the groups Band from the Heart and Boban Kostić’s Orchestra.
