What happens when art becomes more than a finished work or an event \u2014 when a theatre performance opens a difficult conversation, a personal memory becomes part of a collective archive, or a garden becomes a place for art and community?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are some of the possibilities explored by the 14 projects supported through the Artistic Grants scheme<\/strong>, implemented by Heartefact in North Macedonia as part of the Culture for Development project.<\/strong> Spanning four areas \u2014 Performing Arts; Research, Critical and Alternative Cultural Practices; Community and Public Space Cultural Practices; and Youth Empowerment and Inclusive Creative Production<\/strong> – the projects bring different artistic practices, communities and perspectives into the same conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stories that continue after the curtain falls<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For several of the supported projects, theatre becomes a starting point for conversations about issues that shape everyday lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Forbidden Fruit<\/em><\/strong>, by Wonderland Theatre<\/strong>, explores gender equality, bodily autonomy and women\u2019s freedom of expression through a documentary-inspired monodrama combining theatre, humour, movement and original music. The production will tour six cities, with public discussions giving audiences the opportunity to continue the conversation beyond the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TESA<\/strong>\u2019s PRIMA FACIE<\/em><\/strong>, the first staging of the play in North Macedonia, addresses sexual violence, consent and access to justice. Performances in four cities will be accompanied by discussions with legal and mental health professionals, while an online platform will provide educational resources and anonymous testimonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With <\/em>Mirror<\/em><\/strong>, Theatre for All<\/strong> puts local communities at the centre of the creative process. Experiences gathered through conversations, focus groups and theatre exercises in Ko\u010dani, Veles and Sveti Nikole will become the material for an original production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Father,<\/em><\/strong> produced by the Association for One-Actor Theater,<\/strong> approaches memory, family, aging and dementia through an intimate story directed by Ivan Popovski and performed by Bajrush Mijaku. Presented in Albanian with Macedonian subtitles, it also reaches audiences across linguistic communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making space for stories that are often overlooked<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The next group of projects turns to the ways stories, histories and cultural contributions are recorded – and to those that have remained less visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artistic Research as Collective Counter-Archive<\/em><\/strong>, by TP MEDEA \u2013 Kumjana Novakova<\/strong>, explores local memories and overlooked histories in Dojran, Gevgelija and Bitola. Through artistic research, conversations, walking tours and the collection of photographs, sound and video, personal memories become part of a shared archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUZA<\/strong>\u2019s Women in Musical Art Through the Centuries<\/em><\/strong> brings women\u2019s contributions to music history into focus through research, public lectures, discussions and concerts featuring works by women composers performed by young female musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With DISSENSUS<\/em><\/strong>, TEMPLUM<\/strong> connects literature, media and public dialogue through podcasts, articles, live events and the Another Story literary festival across several cities. The project will also create a public digital archive of the materials produced throughout the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kultura Beta<\/strong>\u2019s TRIGGER \u2013 A Caravan for Youth, Alternative and Critical Culture<\/em><\/strong> focuses on alternative and queer culture, bringing young people, artists and local communities together through two thematic magazine issues and six multidisciplinary events across North Macedonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When cultural space can be anywhere<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These projects also raise a different question: what happens when culture moves beyond traditional venues and into public, natural and shared spaces?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dzirni Film and Music Festival<\/em>,<\/strong> organised by Kino Kotur<\/strong>, brings film, music, theatre and visual arts into urban public spaces through screenings, exhibitions and workshops. Its free programme also includes a 48-hour film challenge for young filmmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Pla\u010dkovica Mountain, Association Kupola Stip<\/strong>\u2019s VIA 5 <\/em><\/strong>brings artists from different disciplines together through a residency and three-day festival combining theatre, visual arts, music, film and performance, with gender equality, environmental sustainability and social justice among its themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Bostanie community garden<\/strong>, The Green Ark\u2019s Bostanie Microfestival \u2013 Rooting<\/em><\/strong> connects art, ecology and community through workshops, installations, performances and an open-air festival, turning the garden itself into a shared cultural space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Faces<\/em><\/strong>, by Laboratorium<\/strong>, gives eight emerging artists from visual arts, music, literature, design, photography and performance the time and support to develop their work through residencies, mentoring and public presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating space for young voices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The final group puts young people at the centre, giving them opportunities to develop artistic skills and tell their own stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RomaVision<\/em><\/strong> \u2013<\/em> Culture in Action<\/em><\/strong>, by the Roma Cultural and Media Center BARIKANIPE<\/strong>, brings together young Roma participants to explore film, poetry, visual arts and multimedia and create short films and video stories, while bringing Roma perspectives into greater visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Gostivar, Painted Stories: Culture for Inclusion<\/em><\/strong>, by the Organized Youth Association Gostivar<\/strong>, connects visual arts, literature and digital storytelling with intercultural collaboration. Workshops, an international art colony, a travelling exhibition, a podcast series and a publication bring young participants together around themes of equality, identity and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another cycle of the Artistic Grants scheme is planned to start this autumn, continuing support for new artistic projects and practices across North Macedonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
