\u201cThe Woman Ties the Ponytail\u201d<\/b>, based on the dramatic text of the same title by Marija Rako\u010devi\u0107, which was awarded at the <\/span>2023 Heartefact Competition for the Best Contemporary Full-Length Theatre Play in Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Slovenian, Macedonian, or Montenegrin<\/b>, premiered on <\/span>29 August at the Belgrade Drama Theatre<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The play is a <\/span>co-production of the Belgrade Drama Theatre and Heartefact<\/b>, created as part of BDT\u2019s <\/span>\u201cNew Voices\u201d<\/b> project, and directed by <\/span>Ma\u0161a Pavlovi\u0107<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cA woman is born and dies. Iran or the Balkans \u2013 the cycle repeats itself. Across 13 scenes that trace the different stages of a woman\u2019s life, the characters in this play examine the events, roles and spaces that shape women\u2019s lives in patriarchal societies, repeatedly returning to the question: \u2018Whose women are they?\u2019\u201d says director Ma\u0161a Pavlovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n

In <\/span>2023, the dramatic text was awarded at the Heartefact Competition for the Best Contemporary Full-Length Theatre Play in Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Slovenian, Macedonian, or Montenegrin<\/b>. The decision was made by a jury comprising <\/span>Dubravka Vrgo\u010d, President, and members Molina Udovi\u010dki Fotez and Biljana Srbljanovi\u0107<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe Woman Ties the Ponytail\u201d was inspired by the brutal killings of Mahsa Amini and Hadis Najafi in Iran in 2022, as well as by the women who took part in the \u201cWomen, Life, Freedom\u201d movement. By tying back their hair and standing up against injustice, they became symbols of the struggle for freedom and dignity.<\/p>\n\n

The play explores identity, freedom, violence, social expectations and the position of women in patriarchal societies. Drawing on events that have profoundly shaped contemporary Iran, the dramatic text connects different geographical and social contexts, pointing to patterns of violence and inequality that continue to resurface despite their different circumstances.<\/p>\n\n
