But behind every exhibition, performance, festival, or community programme is an organization that makes it possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building those organizations is exactly what Heartefact&#8217;s Institutional Grants Programme is about.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike project grants, institutional support invests in the organizations themselves, giving them the time and resources to strengthen the foundations that make long-term cultural work possible. The changes may happen behind the scenes, but they shape everything that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest differences the organizations describe is having the opportunity t<strong>o focus on themselves<\/strong>, not only on the next project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lokomotiva.org.mk\/about-us\/\">LOKOMOTIVA \u2013 Centre for New Initiatives in Arts and Culture<\/a><\/strong>, this meant strengthening its organizational structure, developing internal procedures, clarifying roles within the team, and creating a more strategic approach to communication and fundraising. For <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/akto-fru.org\/en\/\u0437\u0430-\u043d\u0430\u0441\/\">Organization for Art and Science \u2013 Faculty of Things That Can&#8217;t Be Learned (FRU)<\/a><\/strong>, it meant finally finding the capacity to develop strategic plans, internal protocols, governance documents, and a clearer organizational structure. <a href=\"https:\/\/cac.org.mk\/about-us\/\"><strong>Contemporary Art Center Skopje<\/strong> <\/a>used the support to improve governance, strengthen fundraising approaches, and invest in audience development, while preparing the organization for long-term sustainability beyond the grant itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several organizations also spoke about something less tangible but equally valuable: <strong>time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kontrapunkt-mk.org\/en\/about-us\/\">Kontrapunkt<\/a><\/strong> described institutional support as the opportunity to invest in work that project funding rarely covers\u2014strengthening financial and administrative systems, developing staff, deepening regional and international partnerships, and advocating for more democratic cultural policies. Instead of constantly working towards the next deadline, the team gained the space to reflect, plan, and develop new initiatives on its own terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grant also allowed organizations to strengthen the way they connect with their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FRU began developing new protocols for managing its cinema space that encourage stronger collaboration with local communities and the wider cultural sector. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tiiiitinc.com\/en\/about-us\/\">Tiiiit! Inc. \u2013 Association for Promotion of Women&#8217;s Activity<\/a><\/strong> invested in new ways of working with its audiences, creating more continuous spaces for feminist culture, youth engagement, and community participation. Kontrapunkt, meanwhile, describes one of the biggest changes as moving away from delivering individual events toward building lasting relationships with artists, researchers, activists, and audiences based on trust and continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What connects all these experiences is the understanding that organizational development is not separate from cultural work &#8211; it makes cultural work possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clear governance, healthy teams, strategic planning, financial sustainability, stronger communication, and organizational learning<\/strong> may not be the most visible outcomes of a grant, but they determine whether organizations can continue supporting artists, responding to communities, and creating meaningful cultural programmes long after a single project ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By investing in organizational development, we are helping build organizations that are more resilient, more sustainable, and better prepared for the future. As these organizations grow stronger, so does the independent cultural sector in North Macedonia &#8211; creating stronger foundations for collaboration, innovation, and lasting cultural impact across the region.<br><br><em>The Culture for Development project aims to contribute to the growth of art and the shaping of socio-political norms, recognizing culture as a vital tool for fostering a more open, democratic, and interconnected society. The first phase of the project runs from the end of 2024 to the end of 2028.
