From June 22 to 28, 2025, the Heartefact House in Belgrade will host a residency for French playwright Gaelle Axelbrun<\/strong> as part of the European project Playground<\/strong><\/em>. This intensive seven-day residency, organized by Heartefact, is part of an international collaboration focused on the development of contemporary dramatic texts by emerging European authors.<\/p>\n\n

During her stay in Belgrade, Gaelle Axelbrun will work with director Tara Mani\u0107, translator Olja Petroni\u0107, and a cast composed of Nevena Ko\u010dovi\u0107, Jana Bjelica, and Andrej Nje\u017ei\u0107<\/strong> to explore the performative potential of her dramatic text Far from the Mud in Which We Sink into Sleep. This poetically rich and multilayered drama delves into the fragile world of childhood, adolescence, and family dynamics, balancing between the everyday and the inner worlds of children.<\/p>\n\n

Although the text is primarily written for an adult audience, the focus of this residency will be on exploring how it resonates with younger viewers\u2014children, teenagers, and older elementary school students. Through analysis of dialogue, character relationships, and emotional dynamics, the team will explore how the text can be staged in a way that communicates meaningfully with a younger audience as well. The final result will be presented as a staged reading, enriched with elements of sound, light, and movement, offering the author an opportunity to see how her text functions in a performance space and in direct interaction with actors.<\/p>\n\n

The public presentation of the work-in-progress will take place on Friday, June 27 at 12:00 PM at Heartefact House<\/strong>. In addition to the reading, the program will also include a conversation with the author, as well as a discussion about this model of creative research and its benefits for emerging playwrights.<\/p>\n\n

The Belgrade residency is part of the Playground project, which Heartefact implements in partnership with PAV and EURADIA (Italy), MOUSSON D’\u00c9T\u00c9 (France), and TEATRUL ARIEL (Romania), with the support of the European Union through the Creative Europe program. The project aims to support the development of new European dramaturgy through practical work, translation, international exchange, and connecting authors with directors, performers, and translators.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

This residency offers the author a valuable space for artistic experimentation and dialogue, and marks an important step toward the future production of the text\u2014whether as a play for adults or as an intergenerational hybrid format for both children and adults.<\/p>\n\n
