At the 52nd International Festival of Alternative and New Theatre (INFANT)<\/strong>, held from June 15 to 19 in Novi Sad, the jury\u2014composed of Vesna Radovanovi\u0107 (dramaturge), Vanja Magi\u0107 (set designer), and Nikolina \u0110ukanovi\u0107 (dramaturge)\u2014had the opportunity to watch six plays selected by the festival\u2019s curator, director Aleksandar Popovski.<\/p>\n\n

After viewing the performances, the jury unanimously decided to award our play How I Learned to Drive, directed by Tara Mani\u0107, the prize for Best Concept<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n

From the jury\u2019s statement: \u201cThe play How I Learned to Drive delivers a powerful and emotionally intense theatrical experience that explores complex family dynamics and traumas through a confined stage space and a minimalist theatrical language. By relocating Paula Vogel\u2019s 1960s American drama to a contemporary spatial and temporal context, the director emphasizes its universality. The almost non-existent physical distance between the actors and the audience enhances the intensity of interaction, effectively drawing viewers into the performance space and contributing to a sense of discomfort, as well as complicity\u2014being witness to something painful and disturbing, yet taking no action.<\/p>\n\n

Skillfully led by a confident directorial vision, the acting duo establishes a harmonious connection with each other and with the audience. Svetozar Cvetkovi\u0107 masterfully constructs a layered character in the manipulative yet charming Uncle Peck, seducing even the audience itself, evoking not only condemnation but also empathy. Meanwhile, Marta Bogosavljevi\u0107 navigates the broad age range of the protagonist Li\u2019l Bit with exceptional maturity, confidence, and nuance\u2014portraying both her inner world as a young adult and the playfulness and vulnerability of childhood with equal skill and conviction. In addition to the main role, the young actress portrays a number of other characters, showcasing her wide-ranging talent. The intimate directorial concept, brilliant acting, and thematically modern approach make this play a complex and unique theatrical piece.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

This is the tenth award for How I Learned to Drive, which has won a prize at every festival it has participated in so far: the 9th Bucini Days in Aleksandrovac, the 16th International Festival of Actors in Banja Luka, the 8th International Festival of Chamber Theatre 55 “Jurislav Koreni\u0107 Days” in Sarajevo\u2026<\/p>\n\n

The play will return to the repertoire of Heartefact House this fall, with upcoming performances at the Ulysses Theatre on Brijuni on July 29, and at the Noorderzon Festival in Groningen in August.<\/p>\n\n
