How to adapt fairy tales to the contemporary social and political context?

The “Fairy Tale Dramaturgy” workshop was held last week at the Heartefact House for students of dramaturgy and theater direction at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. With a guest lecturer from the Czech Republic, playwright and dramaturgist David Koštak, participants analyzed various examples of contemporary fairy tale adaptations during the three-day workshop, mapping out authorial approaches that helped them develop their own adaptations of fairy tales.

David Košťák is a representative of the younger generation of Czech playwrights and works as a dramaturgist at the Leti Theater. In addition to premieres in his home country, his texts have been premiered in Spain, Romania, Italy, and more. His plays often explore metaphor and elements of magical realism, and his repertoire includes many plays for young audiences.

The workshop continues this week with playwright and dramaturgist Biljana Srbljanović, who will work on specific examples of adapting chosen fairy tales over the next three days. The focus of the workshop will be on concepts from Vladimir Propp’s “Morphology of the Folktale,” specifically on archetypes and universal concepts in fairy tales.

The workshop is organized as part of the “Fabulamundi – New Voices” project, a European network of playwrights in which Serbia is represented by Heartefact, Biljana Srbljanović, and Patrik Lazić. By the end of the project, more than 60 playwriting workshops will be held in about ten European countries. The project is supported by the European Union through the Creative Europe program.
